Research and Development (R&D) is a core activity of K-EPSILON. We strongly believe that to be competitive in today’s market we have to be at the forefront and lead the development within the marine sector.
We also cooperate with prestigious R&D centers to seek the best possible R&D team for the project at hand. K-EPSILON's impressive capabilities are due to its continuing investment in product development and research via ECN, INRIA and CNRS guided by interactions with our commercial clients via several joint research project-teams.
Innovation via strategic partnerships with prestigious French research centers
K-EPSILON tools are developed in collaboration with Ecole Centrale de Nantes, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and INRIA (the French national institute for research in computer science and control).
The synergy has resulted in a suite of "in house" solutions consisting of:
K-4in1: Automated Workflow (CAD, mesh, computation & post-processing steps)
K-FSI: Fluid-structure interaction software
K-Optimization: Automatic design optimization tool
INRIA - www.inria.fr
INRIA, the French national institute for research in computer science and control, operating under the dual authority of the Ministry of Research and the Ministry of Industry, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in information and communication science and technology (ICST). The Institute also plays a major role in technology transfer by fostering training through research, diffusion of scientific and technical information, development, as well as providing expert advice and participating in international programs.
By playing a leading role in the scientific community in the field and being in close contact with industry, INRIA is a major participant in the development of ICST in France. INRIA develops many partnerships with industry and fosters technology transfer. INRIA is involved in standardization committees such as the IETF, ISO and the W3C of which INRIA was the European host from 1995 to 2002.
CNRS - www.cnrs.fr
CNRS, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research) is a government-funded research organization, under the administrative authority of France's Ministry of Research. The main objective of CNRS' new strategic plan is to strengthen France's position in the global research environment of the early 21st century. In this interview, Catherine Bréchignac and Arnold Migus, respectively president and director general of CNRS, tell us about the research organization's future. They believe it will have an open and flexible structure, be a European and global leader, and undergo radical transformation to adapt to a changing world.
The CNRS has organized its strategy around six selected topics, and one of which concerns directly K-EPSILON: Renewable Marine Energy and Energy Savings in fishing vessels, motor boats for instance. The last theme is 'Energy,' a vital issue for society, and it will have the highest priority in the next 15 years. Here again, all disciplines are concerned. For instance, geologists will need to carry out work on fossil fuel resources, engineers on new sources of energy and energy conservation, chemists on more efficient ways of storing energy, and economists on the development of new industries.
IREnav Laboratory de l'Ecole Navale - http://www.ecole-navale.fr
The Ecole Navale trains future decision-makers, executives and military leaders who will be able to make decisions and to command. This is possible thanks to a balanced teaching in 3 main fields of education: Human Sciences & Military, Maritime & Technology and Scientific training.
Our sea-specialists will have strong personal beliefs and solid working and thinking methods. Teaching methods will enable them to react quickly to questions related to their professional field (international relations, social, economic and industrial matters) and to manage complex systems which they may have to develop in the future.
ECN - www.ecn.fr
K-EPSILON through a PhD. in Fluid-Structure Interaction in cooperation with the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of Ecole Centrale Nantes (ECN UMR). ECN have set up a highly efficient research partnership, which aims at promoting the most innovative research tools developed in their laboratory and also making them accessible to industrial partners in the form of service provision or through user licenses. The Ecole Centrale de Nantes laboratory has its own unique experimental platforms in Hydrodynamics, Dynamics (Materials, Crash tests), High Speed Machining, Durability mechanics, and Virtual reality.
Sistre - www.sistre-shipdesign-software.com
Strategic Partnerships with the French Government Fishing Department (DPMA)
K-EPSILON's R&D efforts focus primarily on customized solutions applicable to the marine and offshore sectors.
Among the current R&D activities in the scope of French government Fishing Department (DPMA : Direction des Pêches Maritimes et de l’Aquaculture) in order to decrease the fuel consumption of fishing vessels which can be mentioned:
Goal: Creation of computation tools financially accessible for the optimization of bulbous bows
Partners : Jean & Frasca Design, INRIA, CRIHAN and K-EPSILON
Goal: Quantification of fuel consumption savings thanks to the use of sails (e.g. kites) as a means of propulsion on fishing vessels
Partners : Jean & Frasca Design, IRenav, CRIHAN and K-EPSILON
Goal: Design of an optimized boat at the architectural level of its structure and in hydrodynamics
Partners : Groupe Fauroux, Ryvoire Engeneering and K-EPSILON
Goal: Hydrodynamic optimization and maximization of propeller thrust for the dragnet fishing vessels
Partners : Rougier Ingenierie and K-EPSILON
Pôle Mer PACA - http://www.polemerpaca.com/
The PACA Marine Competitivity Centre has the ambition of becoming a global reference for the mastering of sustainable development and safety in the Mediterranean. Providing channels for exchanges, strategic political issues, as well as energy and food resources, is one of the key elements of future global development.
The Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Region has the relevant assets to meet these challenges, as much due to its position in the Mediterranean arch as on its North-South exchange axis. It has the ambition of playing a significant role in the definition and the implementation of an efficient maritime and solidarity policy in the Mediterranean.
OSEO - http://www.oseo.fr
OSEO provides assistance and financial support to French SMEs.
OSEO was born in 2005, by bringing together ANVAR (French innovation agency) and BDPME (SME development bank), around a mission of general interest supporting the regional and national policies. Its mission is to provide assistance and financial support to French SMEs and VSEs in the most decisive phases of their life cycle: start up, innovation, development, business transfer / buy out. By sharing the risk, it facilitates the access of SMEs to financing by banking partners and equity capital investors.
NUMECA International and K-EPSILON have signed a partnership for the commercialization of a new software product FINE/Marine for the simulation of hydrodynamic and marine applications, dedicated to ships, boats, yachts designers and manufacturers.
K-EPSILON is labelled CIR (Crédit Impôt Recherche)
